A study by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that young adults are more likely to use social media than any other age group. The chart below shows that users differ in gender, race, and age across social media platforms.  With so many social networks these days, marketers need to be aware of these stats in order to select the best social media strategy that appeals to their target market.  For instance, I may not recommend Pinterest for a brand that wants to target males since the majority of the users are female.

Do you fit the description of the average Twitter user? The typical user is male (17%), African American (26%), and 18-29 years of age.

The majority of Instagram users are female (16%), African American (23%), and 18-29 years of age.

The typical Pinterest user is mostly female (25%), white (18%), and aged somewhere between 18-49. This virtual pin board captures the largest age group out of the three social networks.
