The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project reported that 46% of adult Internet users are “creators” who post original videos and photos. Another 41% of adult Internet users are “curators” who take videos and photos they find online and repost them on sites like Pinterest. Thirty-two percent of Internet users report doing both creating and curating activities.
Technologies such as smartphones with built-in cameras and social sharing sites like Tumblr have stimulated creating and curating activities online. According to the Pew survey, 12% of adults reported using Pinterst and Instagram, while only 5% used Tumblr. Recently, social sharing has become a form of social currency. Users upload original media or repost media to create conversations or stories online with others.
